Dubbo Fishing Guide

The Macquarie River through Dubbo and the surrounding region provides freshwater fishing for species that make inland waterways one of the most underrated recreational fishing destinations in Australia. Murray cod, golden perch, and catfish inhabit the river system in catchable numbers, and the accessibility of the fishing — bank access within the city, no boat required for many productive locations, and the straightforward tackle and technique that produces results — makes the Macquarie River an excellent option for visitors who want to fish during their Dubbo stay without chartering a boat or travelling to remote locations.

Murray Cod

Murray cod are the flagship species of the Australian inland waterway system: large, powerful, long-lived fish that reach over a metre in length and provide some of the most exciting freshwater angling in the country. The Macquarie River supports Murray cod in the deeper pools, snag-lined sections, and structure-rich habitats within and beyond the city. The fish are ambush predators that position themselves near submerged timber, undercut banks, and deep holes, waiting for prey to pass within striking distance. Lure fishing targeting these structures — casting bibbed diving lures, spinnerbaits, or soft plastics into the likely holding positions — produces strikes that are sudden, aggressive, and test both tackle and technique.

Murray cod are subject to strict regulations. The minimum legal size is 55 centimetres, and the fish are subject to a closed season from September through November when they spawn. Bag limits apply. These regulations reflect the conservation status of a species that was overfished in earlier decades and is recovering under management. Check current NSW regulations before fishing and release undersized fish carefully.

Golden Perch

Golden perch — known locally as yellowbelly — provide more reliable sport on lighter tackle than Murray cod. They are more widely distributed through the river system, respond to both bait and lures, and fight with an energetic determination that is disproportionate to their size. Golden perch in the 35-45 centimetre range are common in the Macquarie, with larger fish available in the deeper sections. They are excellent eating — firm white flesh with mild flavour — and provide the table fish that many anglers value alongside the sport.

Access and Licencing

The Macquarie River is accessible from multiple bank locations within Dubbo, with parks and reserves providing walking access to productive fishing water. No boat is required for effective bank fishing, though a small boat or kayak opens additional water. A current NSW recreational freshwater fishing licence is required for all persons aged 18 and over and can be purchased online through the NSW Department of Primary Industries website. The licence is inexpensive and valid statewide. Dawn and dusk sessions produce the best fishing results, as fish are most active in the low-light periods. Summer midday heat reduces fish activity and angler comfort simultaneously. The river provides free recreational activity during extended stays that the portfolio's coastal properties cannot match.
